The story “The Hate List” written by Jennifer Brown has such an amazing example of character development when following the main character. This story follows the life of Valerie(Val) who is a dynamic character and follows through her emotions and how she grows throughout the story. In the beginning Valerie was very intimidated. Her thought process and decisions were always based around fear itself. This fear was caused by the shooting incident caused by her boyfriend. She was quiet and very depressed, she constantly wanted to keep to herself away from others. Then as the story progresses it becomes a more dynamic change within the way she interacts with each character, for example her mother and father. Towards the middle she became a little more comfortable and tried to get out of her comfort zone. Then finally towards the end, she was much more open and was finally able to move on from her past with her boyfriend Nick and the tragic incident.
Valarie as a Character in the End of the Book
Earlier I talked about how Valarie character in the beginning of the book and before the climax of the book. But, after the climax Valarie as a character has shown growth and became more selfless. She is see and shown as more selfless through her actions of speaking up and talking out about her opinions and thoughts about certain things. She also takes time to talk individually with each of the victim and see how they feel and learn about their point of views. It showed a great improvement of character on her part and showing how much she has grown to take responsibility. Also, it showed a great example of learning how to grow and live without the one you loved. This is shown through Valerie having to see Nick for the person he truly was but yet she still defended him in some ways, even after what he did.
Climax in the Beginning
In this book, the climax can also be seen in the beginning. The beginning is giving information about the shooting and introduces all of the victims. This can be counted as the climax because it describes the turning point of everyone’s lives. Its the biggest cause of the rest of the effects of the story. Since each character that was involved with the story were effected in their own way, this shows a completely huge turning point in their lives. This is what gives the start of the whole entire story.
Compare and Contrast to Another Book
The book The Hate List can be compared to the book The Hate U Give, written by Angie Thomas. I will be comparing and contrasting these two books because they both are fictional stories written and inspired by serious real world issues and events that take place to this day. The way that these two books are similar is because they both give you a first person point of view from teenage girls who experience traumatizing events. The events that they experience are very real world issues and are very dangerous. Both stories go into deep analysis of their thought process and how they interact with their families. You get a understanding of the aftermath of the situations and how they both deal with the effects. Also, each character goes through arguments with their close friends and lose a close person that they loved dearly. But the differences of each book are very different. In the book, The Hate List, we follow Valerie after the school shooting event. We see how she overcomes getting the blame over her boyfriend being the school shooter. Her family isn’t as close and she feels alone. Then, in the story , The Hate U Give, it’s talks about the issues of racial discrimination. This is a very important thing in the world, book shows how Starr wants to make a difference and help. Starr, unlike Valarie, is very close to her family and is more selfless than Val.
A Text to World Connection
Text to world connection is when you take events from a fictional story and compare it to real world events. The story of The Hate List can easily be connected to real world events. A great comparison is the Columbine shooting that took place in 1999, in Colorado inside the Columbine high school. This event was a very tragic to many families, killing 13 and wounding more than 20 kids. Also, another school shooting is Virginia Tech University. This shooting was very fatal, killing around 33 students. Showing how dangerous yet how occurring events like these happen, they don’t just take place in the United States either. This connects to The Hate List because, sadly, the school shooting that took place in the story is very realistic and shows what real life students have to live with and overcome in life after these horrible incidents that they are forced to be apart of. The book also gives a better look into the lives of kids and people who are part of incidents like this, it’s a great way of delving deeper and giving the audience a better understanding of how this effects people and how differently they handle it.
Resolution
The resolution of a story is the unfolding or solution of a complicated issue in a story. The resolution and the climax of the story tie together. The event and action of her visiting the victims and their families ties together with the final scene. This meant that her going to the houses, talking to the newspapers, the parents , and putting together the big event for the victims. This event was to brig closure to these families and friends closer , it also was a great way to show Valerie’s character development. Showing how much her interactions changed with each character like her mom, dad, Jessica, Ginny Baker, and Dr. Hieler’s family. This, mostly, is the ending of the book. Then this caused Valerie to move on from her high school life and grow and have a fresh start when she gets into college.
Climax
The climax of the story is the term used to refer to the part where the tension or action reaches its highest part. In this story, the climax is when Valarie visited the victims and their families . This is the climax because this was a big turning point for Valarie’s character. It was a great way of showing Valarie’s growth as a character since the beginning . In the beginning she was very scared to make big decisions and be selfless. But, when she decided to go out and doing something big for others it showed a big shift in the story and interaction between all of the stories. It was the peak of events that set off her going around more and interacting and trying fix her conflict, internal and external.
Rising Action
Rising action in a story is a series of relevant incidents that create suspense, interest, and tension in a narrative. In this story the rising tension could be the whole event of the school shooting including Nick, and the deaths of the students. But, you can also use the events of her going back to school and seeing everyone after the aftermath. This can be seen as the rising action as well because it creates the beginning of suspense between all of the characters and their reactions towards Valerie. For example, seeing the reactions of the father and seeing how he treats Valerie and her mother. Then seeing the effects of his behavior towards them and how it adds to the story.
Internal Conflict
One type of conflict that is shown in The Hate List is internal conflict. Internal conflict is an internal conflict is the struggle occurring within a character’s mind. Things such as the character views for, but can’t quite reach. In this story internal conflict is a big big component of learning more about the character Valerie. As the story progresses we are constantly hearing and learning about her thought process. Since it is from her point of view we hear her internal thoughts more than anyone else’s. For example when she can’t decide if she should go back to school and start over right after the incident between her and her school. It goes into deep descriptive analysis of her feelings and how she solves the situations.
Conflict
Conflict is a big part of story’s writing and helping keep the audience occupied with the story. Conflict which is defined as any form of struggle between opposing forms. This is shown throughout the story between the character Valerie and her school life. The major conflict in this story is her overcoming the effects of the shooting. It starts off with describing the scene and letting the audience know what is happening and what will be a major obstacle for the characters that were about of the event. Each character that were apart of the event has to deal with the affects of this conflict between the shooting and trying to continue living a normal life. It was between Valerie and her parents and Stacy trying to push away from Valerie to keep her own friendships. The teenagers trying to overcome the harshness are another big conflict that they must face.
